Possess an interest in birds and have
the ability to work with wild birds and the general public.
You must provide proof of personal medical insurance coverage by
producing a copy of your health insurance card to keep on file.
The
work you do as a volunteer is very important and requires a certain degree of
training and acquired experience. Therefore, we ask that prospective volunteers
commit to a minimum of 4 hours per shift. This can be done as often as every day
or once a month.
You will be allowed to work in the hospital,
outside, office and special events/exhibits. You are prohibited from working in
the field with our Rescue Teams or from officially rescuing birds with your own
vehicle.
As a Sanctuary volunteer you will be asked to commit to a dependable schedule.
Your placement and schedule will be determined by SSS. The duties assigned to
you are at the discretion of the staff. When working with animals it is
imperative that a consistent schedule of feeding and cleaning is adhered to.
You will need to have your hours monitored and
documented by SSS. a time-card will be used to keep track of your hours and you
must sign in at the office both at the start and at the end of your shift.
A basic dress code is to be followed:
No tank tops, midriff tops, cut-off shorts, or offensive t-shirts. Shoes are
required. After four shifts of volunteer work you are eligible for a Sanctuary
Logo T-Shirt.
Children under 18 and all other persons other
than Sanctuary volunteers are not permitted to accompany
you during your scheduled work time. Your work is important and requires your
total and undivided attention.
A mature, responsible attitude is required at all
times. Your volunteer tenure can be evaluated at any time and terminated if SSS
feels you are not meeting the stated requirements.
You may be invited to SSS sponsored parties
and events. You will be prohibited from using any drugs, alcohol or tobacco
products while volunteering or attending these events. The Sanctuary is a Drug
Free workplace. No exceptions will be allowed.
If you have any sort of problem with an employee or
volunteer please report it to your supervisor or office staff member
immediately.
TRAINING
The Sanctuary staff will provide all of your hands-on-training. If working with an Outdoor Aviculturist you will be required to attend an orientation at which time you will be provided with a training manual. Hospital volunteers may obtain a training manual in the office or from a member of the medical staff. Additional literature and information on the Sanctuary and its residents is available in the Sanctuary Office located at the rear of the property. However, the bulk of your learning experience will come from questions of your own.
