Please allow me to introduce you to Frankie, the Super Pelican. As you can see, with his cape - Actually his wings spread out, Frankie is an Eastern brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis). Frankie was brought the Sanctuary as an injured juvenile by a rescue volunteer in 1980. The hospital staff deemed him unable to be released due to his injuries, and he has been a favored resident ever since.
Every bird has their own individual personality and Frankie's unique traits make him an enormous help to the staff during baby bird season. During breeding and nesting season many wild pelicans chose to nest on top of our netting. For one reason or another, some of the offspring are unable to be cared for by their own parents. These young pelicans are too big to introduce into our breeding pen, and are then brought to Frankie and he very admirably adopts them as his own. Although most pelicans do not take to the offspring of other pelicans, Frankie has been a loving and patient surrogate parent to many young pelicans over the years. He is often seen stepping in between two fighting "children," mediating the argument and doling out his own brand of advice.
Eastern brown pelicans are year round residents of Florida. The pelican's free-fall dive into the Gulf of Mexico in their never ending search for food is a joy to watch. If you would like to learn more about brown pelicans, please consider adopting Frankie or any other resident birds by filling out the Adopt-A-Bird for below, calling us at (727) 391-6211 or visiting us at the Sanctuary.
